GitHub retools Copilot individual plans ahead of usage-based billing

GitHub has adjusted the individual Copilot lineup it announced when moving to usage-based billing on June 1. The company says feedback centered on whether the included usage would hold up under the strain of longer agent runs, multi-step tasks, and more capable models. In response, Pro and Pro+ get more total usage at the same price, and a new Max tier targets sustained high-volume work.

New structure: base credits plus flex allotment

The individual plans will be Free, Pro, Pro+, and Max, all billed by usage. Free stays as-is: a monthly allowance of code completions plus limited chat and agent usage with auto mode.

For paid tiers, monthly included usage now has two parts:

• Base credits: matched 1:1 to your subscription price, and never change.
• Flex allotment: variable extra usage above base, which will shift over time.

Here are the individual plans effective June 1, 2026:

Spending order and overflow

Base credits are consumed first. When they run out, the flex allotment kicks in automatically at the same rates across the IDE, github.com, and the CLI. There is nothing to enable and no separate bucket to manage; the dashboard shows both what's available and what's been used. If you exhaust the full included amount, you can buy more usage and continue.

Code completions and next edit suggestions stay unlimited on paid plans and do not draw down credits.

Why flex allotments vary

The flex portion is designed to move with the economics of AI, including model pricing, new model releases, and efficiency gains. The base credits, tied 1:1 to the subscription price, remain fixed.

No action required

Monthly Pro and Pro+ subscribers get the additional usage automatically on June 1 when the migration to usage-based billing occurs. Further details are in the usage-based billing documentation.
