GitHub Retains Leader Spot in Gartner’s 2025 AI Code Assistant Evaluation
Gartner has again positioned GitHub as a Leader in its 2025 Magic Quadrant for AI Code Assistants, marking the second consecutive year the company has earned the distinction for GitHub Copilot. The ranking comes at a time when enterprise adoption of AI coding tools is accelerating sharply: Gartner forecasts that by 2028, 90% of enterprise software engineers will use AI code assistants, up from less than 14% in early 2024.
The 2025 Magic Quadrant evaluated 14 vendors on their ability to execute and completeness of vision. GitHub placed highest in ability to execute and furthest right in completeness of vision, according to the company.
Gartner’s definition of a Leader in this category centers on end-to-end developer enablement. Leaders, per the report, integrate advanced models into agentic workflows that improve productivity, code quality, and security across the software development lifecycle. They also demonstrate operational maturity with scalable infrastructure, regulatory compliance, and reliable service levels—plus clear product strategy and expanding ecosystems.
Scale and Recent Releases
GitHub cites more than 20 million users across 77,000 enterprises as evidence of Copilot’s market reach. The company points to a steady stream of post-evaluation releases as reasons its position holds:
- GitHub Copilot Coding Agent: a cloud-based asynchronous teammate that takes issues and delivers fully tested pull requests.
- Copilot agent mode: an in-editor collaborator that works with the developer in real time and edits files on request.
- Copilot Application Modernization: automates updates and refactoring of legacy codebases to newer languages, frameworks, or libraries, handling complex multi-file changes.
- GitHub Copilot in VS Code: the core Copilot experience—real-time code suggestions and function autocomplete—inside the VS Code editor.
- GitHub Copilot in Visual Studio: equivalent AI-powered assistance integrated into the Visual Studio IDE.
Roadmap Priorities
Looking ahead, GitHub’s stated focus is on enterprise-grade capabilities that bake trust, compliance, and governance into the platform at scale, alongside expansion of agentic workflows that offload routine work. The company also plans to broaden model support and deepen IDE and DevSecOps integrations. These investments, GitHub argues, will keep Copilot as the default AI assistant for developers from individual contributors to global enterprises.
