Git Commit Returns for a Third Year in Uruguay
GitHub has marked the third edition of Git Commit, its annual program aimed at closing the tech skills gap among students in Uruguay. This year's installment also introduces Git Commit 101, a free, Spanish-language online AI course that will be available to students and educators year-round.
Uruguay's digital landscape makes it a fitting host. With internet connectivity above 70%, the country reports one of the highest adoption rates in Latin America. It also ranks among the region's top five economies on the Global Innovation Index, with strong showings in knowledge outputs and human capital development, aligning with the nation's push toward a knowledge-based economy.
What Git Commit 101 Offers
Git Commit 101 was developed in collaboration with Microsoft AI for Good. The course is broadcast live from Microsoft's AI Co-Innovation Lab in Montevideo, which is the only such lab in the Southern Hemisphere. Its curriculum covers AI fundamentals, GitHub tools, and GitHub Copilot, with an emphasis on immediately applicable skills. Within its first weeks, the course has already drawn more than 20,000 viewers.
Hands-On Learning at Git Commit
The in-person portion of the event took place at Centros Educativos Impulso and ORT University. The sessions welcomed 125 students—many from vulnerable backgrounds—representing 13 participating institutions.

Rodriguez addressed students during the closing ceremony at the LATU Technology Laboratory in Montevideo, emphasizing the role of education in creating opportunity: “It's very important that each of you receive the best education possible, because it's through education and technology that we're going to open doors. It's how we'll ultimately reach for the sky.”
Building an Inclusive Tech Future
The program's goal goes beyond teaching students to use technology; it aims to equip them to shape a future where innovation is inclusive, accessible, and sustainable. With the 2024 edition complete, attention now turns to what participants will accomplish next and to the next iteration of Git Commit in 2025.
