Chrome launches fund for open source AI on the web

Chrome has announced the Web AI Acceleration Fund, a new financing initiative aimed at supporting open source projects that bring AI capabilities to the web platform. The fund, announced January 24, 2025, follows Chrome's earlier investment programs including the Chrome Framework Fund, Open Source CMS Fund, and Advanced Web Apps Fund.

The program is designed to address the specific challenges developers face when integrating AI into web applications, and to support the libraries, tools, and frameworks that make those integrations possible.

Why the web is a fit for AI

The fund's backers point to several structural advantages of the web as a deployment target for AI features:

How projects will be funded

Funds will be distributed through Open Collective for public visibility into allocation. Supported activities include improving existing web AI libraries, developing performance optimization tools, producing educational content and demos, and integrating AI into established web frameworks.
